KNOWING MY ENNEAGRAM TYPE (Part 1)

Hey Intentional Ladies, I trust you are all doing well. Are you getting to know yourself better? How is it affecting your spiritual life?

I hope you now know your temperament and what you need to do in order to be spiritually strong. If not, catch up on our last blog here. I know most of you have been anticipating the ENNEAGRAM, if you are part, raise your hand. Haha. I’m glad it’s finally here.

Disclaimer: Most of the information shared on the topic of enneagram for today’s blog is gleaned from the book, “The Road Back To You, An Enneagram Journey to Self-Discovery.” Authored by Ian Morgan Cron and Suzanne Stabile. Some may be direct quotes and others paraphrased in the way I understood it when I read and as it relates to my own life.

What is the Enneagram?

The Enneagram was originally created in 1915 by philosopher George Gurdjieff, it wasn’t until the late 1960s when the nine specific personality types were placed within the Enneagram diagram. So it basically consists of 9 personality types. The enneagram is a guide to getting to know our true and authentic selves which paves way for us to become all that God wants us to become. It is just one of the tools to help you deepen your love for God and others. The Enneagram is not exclusively psychological in orientation  Below is a diagram of the Enneagram.  

Why study enneagram?

The enneagram is full of wisdom for those who want to get out of their own way and become who they were created to be. By going out of their way, it means doing away with who they think they are or who they want to be, rather accepting their authentic self. This does not eliminate the tendency to grow and become a better person, it’s the contrary. But hey, how can you strive to be better if you don’t even know who you truly are? Would you know which aspect of your life you need to work on?

“What we don’t know about ourselves can and will hurt us, not to mention others”. There are some very good meaning people, some are even pastors who had done things that had blown up their lives and their ministries, often on an epic scale, because they didn’t know themselves or the human capacity for self-deceit. They studied and knew the Bible inside and out, but did not study themselves.  The enneagram helps us to be more self-aware and to know oneself is to know what one lacks. The first product of self-knowledge is humility. The more self-knowledge you have, the more you’ll become aware of your need for God’s grace, you’ll also have more compassion for yourself and others.

Before you dig for your type, know this

There are 9 personality types namely: (1) Perfectionist, (2) Helper, (3) Performer, (4) Romantic, (5) Investigator, (6) Loyalist, (7) Enthusiast, (8) Challenger and (9) Peacemaker.

Triads: The 9 numbers are divided into 3 triads and that’s how they are arranged in the diagram. 

The Anger or Gut Triad (8,9,1): these numbers are driven by anger; 8 externalizes it, 9 forgets it and 1 internalizes it. 

The Feeling or Heart Triad (2,3,4): these numbers are driven by feelings; 2 focuses outwardly on the feelings of others, 3 has trouble recognizing their own or other people’s feelings and 4 concentrates his attention inwardly on their own feelings. 

The Fear of Head Triad (5,6,7): these numbers are driven by fear. 5 externalizes it, 6 internalizes it and 7 forgets it. They take in and relate to the world through their mind.

Wing numbers: these are the numbers on either side of your number. You may lean toward one of these two wing numbers and pick some of its characteristic energy and traits. 

Stress and security numbers: Your stress number is the number your personality moves toward when you are overtaxed or literally stressed. It’s indicated by the arrow pointing away from your number on the Enneagram. 

Your security number indicates the type your personality moves toward and draws energy and resources from when you’re feeling secure. It is indicated by the arrow pointing toward your number on the Enneagram.

Once you become familiar with this material, you can catch yourself when you’re heading in the direction of a breakthrough or a breakdown and make wiser choices than in the past. 

Deadly Sin: Every Enneagram number has a unique “passion” or deadly sin that drives that number’s behavior. Each personality’s sin is like an addictive, involuntarily repeated behavior that we can only be free of when we recognize how often we give it the keys to drive our personality and take charge.

Now let’s get into the main meal. Shall we?

KNOWING YOUR TYPE

We will be talking about the types according to the triads we spoke about early on. So we are starting with the anger triads (8, 9, 1) and not in a chronological order. 

Type 8 – THE CHALLENGER

Anger is the dominant emotion in an Eight’s life. They are fiercely independent people whose oppositional energy expresses itself in a need to be strong and go up against power. They assume others are untrustworthy until they’ve proven themselves otherwise. They are all in or all out, they “go big or go home.” This makes them prone to  be overindulgence and excessive, they can overwork, overeat, overexercise, overspend and literally over-anything. Lolx. As strange as it sounds, what feels like intimidation to you feels like intimacy to an Eight. For them, conflict is connection. Whew! The talk style of an eight is commanding. A famous Eight is Martin Luther King Jr.

Talking like an Eight: I have been told I’m too blunt and aggressive. I welcome opposition, bring it. Saying No isn’t a problem for me. I don’t like it when people are beating around the bush. Don’t mess with the people I love. Under my tough exterior is a tender, loving heart.

Healthy Eights: are great friends, exceptional leaders and champions of those who can’t fight on their own behalf. They have intelligence, courage and stamina to do what others say can’t be done. They have learned how to use power in the right measure, they also understand vulnerability. 

Average Eights: are dualistic thinkers, so people are good or bad and opinions are right or wrong. They prefer to lead, struggle to follow and use aggression to protect themselves. They have little patience with people who are indecisive.

Unhealthy Eights: are preoccupied with the idea of going to be betrayed. Suspicious and slow to trust others, they resort to revenge when wronged. Eights in this space destroy as much as they create, believing the world is a place where people are objects to be used and contributions from others have little or no lasting value. 

Deadly Sin: of Eights is  Lust but not in the sexual sense. Eights lust after intensity, they want to be wherever the energy and action are, if they can’t find it, they create one. They have more energy than any other number. Domineering and confrontational, eights present a hard, intimidating exterior to mask vulnerability. 

Eights with a Seven wing (8w7): This can  be a wild combination, they are ambitious, outgoing, energetic and fun, reflecting the Seven’s sunny personality. They are impulsive and sometimes reckless. They are very social and live life to the fullest, most entrepreneurial of all numbers. 

Eights with a Nine wing (8w9): These have a more measured approach to life. They are more approachable and more open to cooperation over competition, in keeping with the Nine’s tendency to play a peacemaking role, and others are happy to follow their lead. 

Stress: When Eights are stressed out, they take on the unhealthy behaviors of Fives. They withdraw and become even less connected  to their emotions. Some experience insomnia and neglect to take care of themselves, eat poorly, become secretive and hypervigilant about betrayal.

Security: Eights move to the healthy side of Two in security. They become more caring and aren’t so conscious of hiding their tender and gentle nature. They start to trust something bigger than themselves and allow others to take care of them. 

Spiritual transformation: When Eights are spiritually on the beam and self-aware, they are powerhouses: fearless, inspiring, supportive, loyal and self-confident. However, when they are spiritually down, they become shamelessly reckless, arrogant and sometimes cruel. If you are an Eight reading this, understand that it takes courage to be vulnerable and to love. There are lots of trustworthy people in the world amidst all the other bad nuts, lean into God to guide you. Your motto should be, “When I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12:10). 

Type 9 – THE PEACEMAKER

Nines are self-forgetting, have difficulty in making decisions and tend to be easily distracted. Nines forget their opinions, preferences and priorities instead, they merge with the feelings, viewpoints and pursuits of others and by doing so, erase themselves. Because they sometimes lack drive and focus, average Nines become jacks-of-all-trades and masters of none. They are generalists who, because they know a little about everything, can find something to talk about with everybody. Nines are so good at  seeing and identifying with every viewpoint that people often walk away from them feeling the Nine not only understood them but also agreed with them,  even though the Nine never actually said so. A famous Nine is Barack Obama.

Talking like a Nine: I’ll do almost anything to avoid conflict. I’m not a self-starter. I tend to procrastinate. I’m happy to go along with what others want to do. I’m a “what you see is what you get” person. I would feel selfish to spend a whole day doing whatever I want to do. 

Healthy Nines: are natural mediators, unselfish, flexible and inclusive. They see and value the perspective of other people and can harmonize what seem to be irreconcilable points of view. 

Average Nines: while they come off as sweet and easygoing, are stubborn and out of touch with their anger. They don’t ask for much though they appreciate what others do for them.

Unhealthy Nines: have trouble making decisions and become overly dependent. To dull feelings of sadness and anger, they engage in numbing behaviors. 

Deadly Sin: of Nines is sloth, or laziness and it is spiritual in nature. Immature Nines don’t fully connect to the fire in the belly they need to chase after their God-given life and, as a result, fail to become their own person. Nines are out of touch with the good side of anger that drives change.

Nines with an Eight wing (9w8): this is one of the most complex combinations on the Enneagram, given the Eights need to go against power and the Nine’s need to avoid conflict. They are more energized, confident, stubborn, outgoing and inner-directed. Though they will sometimes change their minds, they find it much easier to be clear and direct about things that are important to them. They are more confrontational than other nines.

Nines with a One wing (9w1): they have a strong sense of the difference between right and wrong. The One energy helps these Nines to stay a little more focused, so they are able to accomplish more, which enhances their confidence. They are principled and modest as leaders.

Stress: In stress, Nines start to act like unhealthy Sixes. They become overcommitted, worried, rigid and anxious even though they don’t know why. These Nines become more self-doubting, which makes decision making more difficult than usual.

Security: When Nines are feeling comfortable and safe in the world, they move to the positive side of Three, where they are more goal oriented, decisive, self-confident and in touch with their life’s agenda. They can enjoy genuine peace and harmony as they take command of their lives.

Spiritual transformation: The Nine’s weakness for merging is the dark side of an enviable spiritual gift. When it comes to attaining a unitive knowledge of God and becoming “one with Christ”, healthy Nines almost always cross the finish line first. Since we (because I’m a 9 lol) always consider the opinions of others above ours, it’s easy for us to totally lean on the Holy Spirit for guidance when we develop a strong relationship with Him. 

If it’s in our nature to easily succumb to the pursuit of others, why not succumb to the pursuit of SHS (Sweet Holy Spirit), the one who knows the plans and purposes of our lives. You now understand why I’m an #SHSGurl? Haha. Nines know how to rest in the love of God and share themselves more generously than the other numbers. But Nines resist the unsafe nature of real spiritual transformation. If you are a Nine, “Wake up and say yes to the adventure of your own life, we see you and your life matters.” God didn’t invite you to live someone else’s life. We need you here.

    Uber is cashing in on spooky season.

    The ridehailing company will now deliver costumes, makeup, and even decorations from Spirit Halloween, the largest Halloween retailer in North America, Uber announced in a press release Friday.

    Big-box retailers are getting into Halloween earlier and earlier, suggesting American consumers continue spending on the October holiday even as they pull back from other discretionary purchases.

    Customers in the US and Canada can buy their Chipotle burrito costume for the same price as in store, but without having to visit the seasonal Halloween store that pops up in abandoned storefronts every year, Uber said. Of course, there will still be the fees associated with Uber Eats delivery.

    Spirit Halloween has 1,525 locations.

    “The holiday season officially kicks off this time of year, and households across the country are looking to on-demand delivery to get what’s needed—now,” said Beryl Sanders, director of US grocery and retail partnerships at Uber, in a statement.

    Since the pandemic, different types of retailers have partnered with Uber to deliver their goods – such as Olive Garden for its breadsticks and pasta. Uber Eats has also partnered with Big Lots, Lowe’s, Michael’s and Party City for on-demand delivery.

    Uber and its competitors have also experimented with robot deliveries, though those have not fully taken off in the US market.
