My Adorable Little Sister🥰

It’s the 2nd week in August. The year is about to end already, whoosh! Well, I hope you’re not leaving things to chance.

I’m amazed at the feedback from the last post. Actually, when SHS (Sweet Holy Spirit) told me about our focus for this month, I didn’t understand then what He wanted to do in the lives of His people but I get it now. Thanks to you all who have been taking time to read and share the blogs.  God richly bless you all.

Guess who we have in the studio today! All the way from East Africa. She is the reason I added visiting Kenya to my bucket list. I applied to the Baobab Platform and Global Give Back Circle Mentorship program in 2021. That was how I was blessed with this precious gift as a mentor. If you ask me, she’s my big sister. She made me more intentional about my life and what I do, positively impacting my life across nations and continents, thanks to Zoom and Google meet. Haha.

I’m very glad I have her with me today. I can’t talk about Sister-ship and not have her on board. She has expanded my sister-ships beyond nations through the amazing people she has introduced me to.  She is in the person of Ms. Phyllis Musau. My very amazing, hardworking, godly and inspiring mentor from Nairobi, Kenya. People of God make some noise for her.

BM: You are welcome ma’am, I’m honored to have you here.

PM: Thank you Barbara, I’m always proud of you, keep breaking boundaries.

BM: You taught me well. Let’s get straight into it. Our focus for this month is sister-ship. When you hear the word sister, what comes to mind?

PM: Many things but the top three are: Love, Caring and Sharing.

These three I have received from my sister and tried my best to extend to her. When we were little, we fought for bread crust, clothes, toys; you know the typical sibling fights.

I do have a memory that depicts these three things in the simplest form yet remains unforgettable to me; where my little sister cried so much when time came for me to be enrolled in a boarding school for my upper primary studies. She resorted to saving up her little pocket money throughout the school term, then she would use it to purchase sweets, chocolates or chips and chicken on closing day in anticipation for my return  back home for the holidays.

Fast forward, in adulthood, love has been our guiding light and we continue to share not just material stuff but ideologies, convictions and principles. The most treasured form of care I continue to enjoy from my sister is Intercession. She has upheld me in prayer in moments where I needed it so badly yet remained unaware.

BM: Wow! I know you have a little sister, do you have a big sister too?

PM: Haha! No, actually I am the firstborn of two siblings, the last born being my incredible sister Winnie. Growing up I did wish for a big brother though! Somebody who could protect me from bullies in school or spoil me with goodies, you know.

BM: Awww sorry about that, I really enjoyed a lot of “sister thank yous” and still do. Hehehe. So now tell me, how has your role as a sister impacted your life?

PM: Oh, it made me very responsible at a young age. As a firstborn I got to understand early on that it was not just about me. I became conscious of time and how to manage it between study, play and taking care of my little sister which involved picking her from nursery school.

Our dad was very intentional about functional relationships within his family. So even in our early adulthood he would call one of us separately and pretend to find out how the other was doing. If you did not know, then you had a question to answer on why you had not checked on your sister.

BM: I like that intentional act of your father, I think every parent should do that. Has your little sister perchance had any profound impact on your life?

PM: Absolutely. Like I mentioned earlier, my sister has cared for me on her knees in prayer. She also raised my curiosity where reading the word of God is concerned by injecting bible stories in  our regular conversations. She would tell me the story and after getting me hooked, mention, “imagine this story is in the Bible!”

I would continuously get shocked because at the time I was struggling to keep the Bible and my eyes open simultaneously.

BM: Interesting! Such an amazing evangelism method. Would you encourage people to learn from their younger sisters?

PM: Oh yes! your siblings are part of your destiny helpers. Whether younger or older. We are all gifted differently and your younger sibling may certainly be better than you in one or more things. Not staying connected is denying yourself lots of knowledge and wisdom.

BM: Destiny helper! Hits deep, mostly when people pray for destiny helpers, they are always looking outside, let’s start looking in our own family.  I would like to know your fondest memory of your little sister.

PM: Oh I have many. I miss her a lot now that she is outside the country. I miss the private jokes that I can only crack with my sister. She is the expert of calming me down when things are tough, and temperatures are high.

I think I have already mentioned my fondest memory so I can add a funny memory where while growing up my sis got sick from preparing and consuming uncooked pancakes. The food poisoning was so serious, she wrote a ‘will’. I never got to see it since I was away in boarding school, but she tells me she had allotted me sanitary towels

BM: Awwww. I’m teary right now. Why sanitary towels though. Lolx. What are some intentional steps one can take to ensure a stronger bond between sisters?

PM:     Listen actively

Love with words and actions

Show care by extending support especially where dreams and aspirations are concerned.

BM: Mmmmmh! Where dreams and aspirations are concerned.

If you had the chance to start afresh your journey of being a sister, is there anything you would have done differently?

PM: Absolutely! I was tough on my sister during stressful situations. Now that I know how to handle and manage stress better, I feel like I missed out on loving her in those moments when times were tough.

BM: I see, when you know better, you do better. What advice will you give to a younger sister who has a sour relationship with her big sister but desires a healthy relationship with her big sister?

PM: Start with prayer Sis. Pray for her and ask for grace and patience as God works on the relationship.

Tip: Every heart melts in the presence of love. Find out what her love language is and begin to reach out to her through the language she understands.

BM: Wow! This is wisdom. It’s sad that sometimes we know certain valuable things such as love language among others but we practice it mostly in our love relationships or in relation with outsiders to the neglect of our siblings. Mercy on us.

PM: Very true, May God help us.

BM: All too soon we are ending, what are your last words for my lovely readers on sister-ship?

PM: This kind of relationship is worth every penny. Invest in it. Pray, share, make time, love and laugh. A sister is your first and free best friend gift from God.

BM: Wow! Wow! Wow! Amazing nuggets here. I’m so so blessed. I told you guys she is a powerhouse. God richly bless you ma’am.

PM: Amen. It was a big privilege to be on this platform. I had the time of my life answering these questions. Keep up the good work.

  1. Isn’t this amazing, my little sis from my mom’s side is just so annoying, she’s only 3 but can say real bad words to an elderly and she’s quick tempered. I used to beat mercilessly and tell her to stop but I realized I had to love her rather. She remains the same, I recall praying for her too sometime ago but I’m just tired now

    • Awwwww. Have mercy on her. As you rightly said, keep loving her and praying for her.
I believe everything will be fine

  2. My brother recommended I might like this web site.
He was totally right. This submit actually made my day.
You cann’t imagine just how much time I had spent for this info!
